People Pleaser to Cowgirl Confident
Empowerment Through Connection
Equine Encounters
at The Homeplace Ranch
For women ready to kick feeling dismissed, unappreciated and invisible
Cowgirl confidence is an attitude.
Tenderness and toughness.
It’s available to all, even if you’ve never touched a horse.
It’s time to touch a horse.
When I was promoted to accounting supervisor at an energy company at 22, I mistakenly believed my superior leadership skills were responsible. Nearly a decade later, horses taught me that I was a technically competent accountant and a poor leader who alternated between bribery and bullying. When I became more self-aware and made my actions congruent with my emotions, my horses began to trust me as someone who would keep them safe. The most amazing thing is that ALL my relationships improved with this knowledge.
My love and respect for the horses caused me to learn a different way of showing up: more compassionately and respectfully. As I became a leader the horses chose to follow, I also learned to trust myself to make good decisions for myself and others. Since then, I am grateful for the opportunity to share these lessons from amazing teachers who live in the moment and seek nothing more than to get back to grazing after a scare. We have a lot to learn from these majestic creatures and the people that love and care for them.

What makes horses special?
Most people are aware that animals can help people feel better. What makes horses particularly helpful in personal development?
- They are prey animals, not predators. Living “in the moment” is necessary for their survival.
- They are very aware of emotion and intention in the people that interact with them.
- Despite their heightened awareness of danger, horses seek calmness and quickly “get back to grazing.”
- Horses are big and powerful and choose to partner with people.
- Horses are amazing listeners with big hearts.
- Horses are herd animals and communicate their emotions clearly and non-verbally.
Moments of Brilliance
After a horse show many years ago, the judge gave me a piece of advice that changed my life. He told me, “You can select your Champion one of two ways. You can choose the horse that makes the fewest errors, or the one that has moments of brilliance.”
Before I heard this, I would make a small mistake and get stuck at the mistake, making several more mistakes rather than shaking it off.
Since then, I’ve tried very hard to judge myself and those I love on moments of brilliance. That practice changed my world.

What participants are saying:
Jocelyn’s middle name should be ‘Safety First’. In the space she creates I feel listened to. Her feedback is unapologetic, direct, and always served with compassion. Jocelyn saw the gifts in me that I was blind to and invited me to blossom. A true mentor does that.
Don’t miss this opportunity! So glad I attended the first one. Very well organized and thought out. My horse was so relaxed he had a nap on my arm!!The power of connection with each other, with the natural world is good medicine.
I have been amazed by it all.
Jocelyn was able to create and guide me through a day that allowed reflection, insight, being courageous, and allowing myself to be vulnerable. I enjoyed the time with the horses, and Jocelyn’s guidance in seeing a bigger point of view in how I can show up in the world. It’s been a remarkable experience.
Particular experience that stood out:
Leading Angus. Both of us understood one another as we worked as a team. Not just me walking him around with no point. It had meaning because it felt like we understood one another.
I just think your commitment and deliverance was outstanding!
It was just what the heart needed and just what the doctor ordered. And I just am leaving with peace and gratitude and gratefulness and it connected me back to my ranch roots which is a blessing and a gift in my life. So thank you very much, Jocelyn, and I’m so glad I came.
I think everybody came with a different life experience, a different journey, different things that they maybe are challenging currently and things they have overcome. So there was a lot of sharing of personal experiences but also a lot of learning through the horses of different skills that we can translate to work, to home, to all our relationships outside of the horse world, too, which is really fascinating. So, also strongly recommend it.
How incredible the experience has been. The connection with other participants, the connection with the horses and the insights that we were able to get from discussing that amongst ourselves and our friends. I’m taking a piece away from that that was so much deeper than I had expected coming here.
I can’t recommend Jocelyn’s course enough, her retreat. If you get the opportunity, sign up and do it. ‘Cause it’s amazing and I think everyone has taken away something different, a little piece of their own and sharing that has been really been quite a magical day. And at Homeplace Ranch. Incredible. We’re very lucky.
